PSD2 stands for “Payment Services Directive 2” and refers to what is officially called the “Revised Payment Services Directive – PSD2, Directive (EU) 2015/2366”

The PSD2 is a so-called “EU Directive” which means that is a type of legislation that applies to the entire European Union (26 countries) and to the entire European Economic Area (all EU member states + 4 non-member states).

Purpose of the PSD2

The officially stated purpose of the PSD2 is to increase competition within the European Union and European Economic Area, increase participation in the payments industry (specifically from non-banks and fintechs), and to provide for a level playing field by harmonising consumer protection and regulatory requirements.
